The most popular Korean thriller Squid Game is set to return with its third and final season on June 27 and Netflix has released the first 6 minutes as a sneak peek. The preview reveals the dramatic return of the main character, Gi-hun and promises a season packed with even more terrifying games, psychological warfare and harrowing decisions.
Shocking Return of Gi-hun
In the premiere’s opening moments, Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) is brought back into the game dormitory inside a coffin shaped like a gift box. Fellow players are surprised and relieved to see him alive but Gi-hun is no longer the same man. Lee Jung-jae explains the moment as being “being sucked into a different universe.”
“When the coffin of Gi-hun is opened, Gi-hun is reborn,” Lee Jung-jae says. “He has to go back to the competition, play the game and make choices again. ”
Front Man Cruel New Strategy
This season, the Front Man (played by Lee Byung-hun) intensifies the psychological pressure on Gi-hun. According to director Hwang Dong-hyuk, instead of killing Gi-hun, the Front Man has a deeper, more twisted plan by sending him back into the game.
“Front Man aims Gi-hun to be driven to a state where he will finally give up his faith in humanity as well as faith in himself. So it is important for the Front Man that Gi-hun returns to the game.”
Squid Game star Lee Byung-hun agrees with Hwang explaining that Front Man ultimately is not worried about whether Gi-hun lives or dies. He simply just wants his former teammate to share his outlook — especially since they’re both former Squid Game champions.
“Front Man aims to dismantle the noble belief that Gi-hun holds on to. Front Man wants that Gi-hun will inevitably change to think just like him,” Lee Byung-hun says.
Final Season and Decisive Battle
Squid Game Season 3 will conclude the story. Gi-hun must not only survive even more dangerous games, but also confront deep questions about himself, humanity and the system. Meanwhile, fans catch a glimpse of Jun-ho on a boat — sparking hope that the unresolved mysteries from Season 2 will finally be answered.
