LAHORE: The 78th Independence Day celebrations are in full swing across Lahore, with the city draped in green and white ahead of August 14. Festivities include a concert at Liberty Chowk tonight, a flag-hoisting ceremony at Hazuri Bagh tomorrow, and fireworks at Minar-e-Pakistan. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has urged the public, especially youth and children, to take part in what she calls the “struggle for truth” to protect Pakistan’s freedom.

Liberty Chowk will host a musical night on Wednesday (August 13), where Maryam Nawaz will be the guest of honour. The event will end with a firework display over the city skyline.

“This is not just a celebration but a reminder of the sacrifices that brought us freedom,” the chief minister said in her statement earlier today.

The event is part of the Punjab government’s campaign, From the Acquisition of Independence to the Protection of Independence, which includes cultural programmes in districts across the province.

Flag-hoisting at Hazuri Bagh and pyrotechnics at Minar-e-Pakistan

On Thursday morning, the official flag-hoisting ceremony will take place at Hazuri Bagh, attended by senior officials and dignitaries. It will be followed by a fireworks show at Minar-e-Pakistan in the evening.

The Environment Department has organised a “Battle of Truth” bike rally, with safety measures and traffic diversions coordinated between police, the Parks and Horticulture Authority, and city administration.

Streets, markets, and homes decorated in patriotic colours

From Anarkali to Gulberg, streets and shopfronts are adorned with fairy lights and fluttering flags. Vendors report brisk sales of flags, badges, stickers, and Independence Day merchandise.

Flag sellers say they are struggling to keep up with demand, while children can be seen haggling for souvenirs before proudly taking them home. Retailers are offering Azadi sales, with discounts on apparel, electronics, and accessories.

Fashion outlets are clearing shelves with seasonal markdowns, and restaurants have launched themed menus and deals.

Behind-the-scenes coordination

At a key planning meeting chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner General Lahore, officials finalised security and traffic arrangements for the two-day celebration.

“The Independence Day is our most significant historical marker, and departments must work together to honour the sacrifices of our founders,” the ADCG said.

Public spaces such as Jilani Park and Minar-e-Pakistan have been prepared to welcome crowds, with added lighting, seating arrangements, and security checkpoints.
